PETALING JAYA: Boustead Holdings Bhd’s (BHB) earnings will likely be supported by contributions from its interest in banking via Affin Bank Bhd and the plantation business via Boustead Plantations Bhd (BPlant).
Analysts think the Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT)-controlled group offers value despite being linked with the RM9bil littoral combat ships (LCS) scandal involving Boustead Heavy Industries Corp Bhd’s (BHIC) 20.77%-owned Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd.
Year-to-date, BHB’ share price is up some 38% to 76 sen at close yesterday.
Notwithstanding the LCS link, Rakuten Trade head of equity sales Vincent Lau said BHB is trading at a “commendable” level since its low of 52.5 sen in mid December last year and historic low of 34.5 sen in 2020.
“Investors see the value in the stock due to its banking and plantation assets which would do fairly well this year.
“With the rising interest rates, banks are expected to perform well. Affin Bank also recently sold of its stake in asset management arm, Affin Hwang Asset Management Bhd, while its core banking business is growing well.
“Its plantation division is also expected record good profits although crude palm oil prices have fell from its peak, but still at a firm level,” he told StarBizWeek.

BHB has a 57.4% stake in BPlant and 21% stake in Affin Bank. It also holds a 51.85% stake in Pharmaniaga Bhd and 65% in BHIC.
While the LCS link may dampen investor sentiment, Lau noted BHB is trading at a discount to its asset value, which may lure investors into buying the stock.
At the current price of 76 sen a share, BHB’s market capitalisation of RM1.55bil reflects its stake values in BPlant (RM1.04bil), Pharmaniaga (RM458.5mil) and BHIC (RM72.7mil) with RM994.24mil worth of Affin Bank stock thrown in free.
LTAT, which holds 59.4% of BHB, also has a 33.32% direct stake in Affin Bank, 8.16% in BHIC, 10.59% in BPlant and 8.62% in Pharmaniaga.
MIDF Research is positive on Affin Bank’s prospects as it is undergoing major revamp of its services as well as divestments which seeks to improve return on capital employed.
The research house said the bank is focused on growing its loan book in quantity and quality with the proceeds from recent asset sales.
The bank will use the cash proceeds from sale of its asset management business to build up its loan book, and strengthen capital reserves.
